NEWSLETTER – JAN. 24-28

RELIGION – We will study about the meaning of being Catholic.

READING – We will read Volcanoes: Nature’s Incredible Fireworks. We will work on compare/contrast and author’s purpose. Students should study vocabulary for this story. The Selection Test is on Friday.

ENGLISH – We will work on the use and spelling of irregular verbs. We will also work on various writing activities.

SPELLING – We will not begin another unit. We will continue to study these words: example, heard, several, change, and answer. We will also review homophones especially lets, let’s, its, it’s, to, too, and two. We will also review silent letters in wr, mb, kn, gn, and st. Homework is due on Thursday.

MATH - We will study multiplication by 6, 7, and 8. We will work on solving multi-step problems. Keep studying the multiplication facts at home. We’ll have a quiz on Friday.

SCIENCE – We will work on studying wind speed and anemometers.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study state and federal government.
· One of these days we are actually going to do what I have planned! Maybe we’ll have a full week this time! No more snow!
· Prayer Service is on Monday.
· Reports cards will be hopefully be sent home today.

NEWSLETTER – DEC. 6-10

RELIGION – We will study the Holy Trinity.

READING – We will begin Night Letters. Students should study vocabulary for this story. We will not have the Selection Test until next Tuesday or Wednesday.

ENGLISH – We will write persuasive letters.

SPELLING – The new words are: paper, hard, near, sentence, and better. We will work on adding –ing and –ed. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is on Friday.

MATH – We will begin metric. We’ll study cm, dm, m, km, L, and mL.

SCIENCE – We will review the water cycle and work pg. D24-25. Students may need to finish this on Monday evening. We will not have a test on this chapter.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will research Native Americans in class and work on a project to share the findings.
· We will perform on Monday for the St. Barbara seniors and on Tuesday at 12:45 for the parents and other family members. We hope you can make it.
· Santa’s Workshop is on Thursday.
· Kids on the Block presentation is on Friday.
· No school on Wednesday.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 29-DEC. 3

RELIGION – We will study about Advent and its traditions.

READING – We’ll read Pushing Up the Sky. We will work on author’s purpose, cause/effect, and summarizing. Students should study vocabulary for this story. Selection Test is on Friday.

ENGLISH – We will continue to study linking verbs and begin helping and main verbs.

SPELLING – the new words are: soon, since, white, story, and ever. We will work on adding er and est to base words. We will also work on the suffixes un, re, mis, and dis. Homework is due on Thursday.

MATH – We will study units of weight, temperature, and solving problems by working backwards. Soon we will begin the metric units of measurement.

SCIENCE - We will study the water cycle.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study map skills. We will also study about Native Americans and how their lives changed and stayed the same as a result of the settlers.
· Students will need to bring a Christmas shirt or something red, green, or white by Tuesday. Parents and families are invited to our Dec. 7 performance at 12:45 in the Church Basement.
· Students should have brought home an A.R. update. Each student should have at least 5 points with no less than a 70% average.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 15-19

RELIGION – Jesus teaches us to love. We will also work on being thankful in preparation of Thanksgiving. We’ll also begin putting together candy cane ornaments for the seniors.

READING – We will read The Gardener. We’ll work on cause/effect. Students should study vocabulary for this story.

ENGLISH – We will continue to work on possessive nouns. Action and linking verbs will also be studied. We’ll work on using precise words in our writing.

SPELLING – The new words are: night, picture, being, study, and second. We’ll work on adding s, es, and ies to words and contractions. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is on Friday.

MATH – The Chapter 3 Test is on Tuesday. Next we will begin measurement. Students may need some help at home, especially when we convert feet, yards, and miles.

SCIENCE – We will study estuaries, begin the water cycle with evaporation.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study about state government and its responsibilities. We will also talk about communities and how they change and grow. We’ll work on map skills.


· Students should have brought home their Christmas Program parts to memorize. They should have some type of Christmas shirt or something red or green to wear if possible. Christmas hats may also be worn if they don’t become a distraction. We don’t need anything sent in to school yet.
· We are planning the Mass for Friday with grades 3 and 4.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 2-5

RELIGION – We will study sin, healing, and the steps of Reconciliation.

READING – We’ll read Tops or Bottoms and we’ll work on author’s purpose and main idea. Students should study vocabulary for this story. Selection Test is on Friday.

ENGLISH – We will work on singular possessive nouns.

SPELLING – The new words are: need, far, hand, high, year. We will work on words with silent letters such as wrote and words with the blends spl, thr, squ, and str. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is on Friday.

MATH – We will work on subtraction with regrouping and estimating differences.

SCIENCE – We will study the properties of soil and soil conservation. We’ll examine soil under a microscope.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will begin our study of our national Capitol and our state capital.


· We will have a special author visiting on Thursday.
· Pep Rally for the Crusader Classic is on Friday.
· Students will be assigned parts for our Christmas Program. They will need to work on memorizing these at home.
· Great Work on the Saint Projects!

NEWSLETTER – OCT. 18-22

RELIGION – We will study about Jesus’ forgiveness, healing, compassion, and mercy. We will also begin planning for our Christmas performance. Students should be working on their Saint Report due Oct. 26

READING – We will read A Day’s Work. We’ll work on characters and their actions and traits. We will also work on vocabulary and context clues. Students should study vocabulary for this story. The Selection Test is Friday.

SPELLING – The new words are: four, head, kind, above, and began. We will study compound words and words with c + le. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is on Friday.

ENGLISH – We will work on singular and plural nouns and writing a summary.

MATH – We will begin Chapter 3 with addition properties. We will also add 2 and 3 digit numbers with regrouping and we’ll estimate sums. Students really need to memorize the simple addition and subtraction facts to 20.

SCIENCE – We will study earthquakes, volcanoes, and floods. There will be a Chapter Test on Oct. 28. A study guide will be sent home this week.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study about communities, early settlements, and reading tables for information.


· Conference times will be sent home on Tuesday. If there are any problems please let me know ASAP.
· Field trip information will be sent home this week to those driving and chaperoning. Just let me know if you need to make any changes.

NEWSLETTER – OCT. 4-7

RELIGION – We will study about St. Francis and St. Therese and kinds of prayer. Unit 1 Test is Oct. 14

READING – We will work on the Unit 1 Test. We’ll study guide words and read several poems. There will not be a Selection Test this week.

ENGLISH – We will begin writing a personal narrative.

SPELLING – The new words are: feet, land, side, without, and boy. We will work on the /oy/ sound spelled oy and oi. Homework is due on Wednesday. Test is on Thursday.

MATH – We will tell time to 5 and 1 minute. We will also work on problem solving with time and elapsed time.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will review Unit 1. The test is on Thursday. A study guide and vocabulary list was sent home.

SCIENCE – Landforms will be studied and made.

· The last day to take A.R. tests for this quarter is Oct. 19. Students need to earn 10 points. I will send home an update this week.
· Thanks for returning the yes/no slips.
· So far I have many parents volunteering to drive. I won’t need all drivers, but all are welcome to go with us. You may want to pair up and ride together. So far I have: Mrs. Mabjish, Mrs. Gurren, Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. DeJonckheere, Mrs. Rohling, Mr. Wellman, Mrs. Engel, Mr. Koch, Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. Hawkins, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Stephens, Mrs. Senger, Mrs. Hammond, and Mrs. Tragesser. If anyone else would like to go just let me know.
