The Third Graders did an awesome job in their Christmas Program.

NEWSLETTER – DEC. 14-18

RELIGION – We will study St. Lucia, Christmas, and review the Sacrament of Penance. Students will have the opportunity to receive this sacrament on Tuesday.

READING – We will read Night Letters and work on drawing conclusions. We will not have a Selection Test on this story.

ENGLISH – We will work on subject/verb agreement.

SPELLING – Our new words are: best, across, during, today, and however. We will work on the /ou/ sound in tough and group and the /j/ and /k/ sounds. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is Friday.

MATH – We will begin multiplication. We’ll work on vocabulary words like array, factor, and product. We’ll make arrays and begin multiplying by 2, 5, and 10. Students should begin to study these facts.

SCIENCE - We will study clouds, measuring wind and rain. Cloud papers are due by Thursday.

· The students will present their program on Monday and Tuesday at 1:00. I hope many of you can make it on Tuesday. They are doing and excellent job.
· Christmas Party is Friday at 1:30.
· Last day to take A.R. tests for this quarter is Jan. 8. Most students have already passed the 10 point goal. Good Work!

NEWSLETTER – DEC. 7-11

RELIGION – We will study about the Immaculate Conception, being Catholic, the Paschal Mystery, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

READING – Our Selection Test for Pushing Up the Sky is on Wednesday. Students should review vocabulary for this story.

ENGLISH – We will continue with helping and main verbs. We will also work on our persuasive letters.

SPELLING – The new words are: paper, hard, near, sentence, and better. We’ll work on adding –ing and –ed to words. Homework is due on Thursday.

MATH – We will have a Chapter 4 test on Thursday. We’ll review and students will need to finish pgs. 202-203 on Wednesday. Conversion charts will be available during the test. Students do not need to memorize this information.

SCIENCE – We will begin our study of weather with properties of air and temperature.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study the thirteen colonies. Students will need to memorize these colonies for a quiz on Friday.

· Students should have already brought in their play costume. Please let me know if you have any questions. We hope to see you on the 15th.
· Our first performance is Friday.
· No school on Tuesday.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 30 – DEC. 4

RELIGION – We will work on various Advent activities.

READING – We will read Pushing Up the Sky. We’ll also work on author’s purpose and cause/effect. Students should study vocabulary from this story. They should read the story at home on Tuesday evening. We will NOT have a Selection Test this week. Be sure to review and return the Unit Test.

ENGLISH – We will work on helping and main verbs and persuasive letter writing.

SPELLING – The new words are: soon, story, since, white, and ever. We will work on –er and –est endings. We’ll also work on the prefixes: un-, re-, mis-, and dis-. Homework is due on Thursday. Test is on Friday.

MATH – We will study metric measurement. We’ll work on meters, kilometers, liters, millimeters, grams, and kilograms.

SCIENCE – Evaporation and the Water Cycle will be studied.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Native American group projects are due on Dec. 1. We’ll take time to share these posters.

· Students should bring in their play costume or shirt by Monday, Dec. 7.
· Last day to take A.R. tests for the second quarter is Jan. 8. I would recommend reaching goals before Christmas. Most students are already there or nearly there.
· Dismissal on Tuesday is at 10:00.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 23-24

RELIGION – We will begin studying Advent. We will make Jesse Tree ornaments and Advent Wreaths is preparation for next week.

READING – The Unit 2 Test will be completed. We’ll also work on summarizing a story.

ENGLISH – We will continue to review possessive nouns and action and linking verbs.

SPELLING – We won’t have any new words this week.

MATH – We will begin metric measurement with centimeters and decimeters.

SCIENCE – Water Conservation will be studied. We’ll begin the Water Cycle.

SOCIAL STUDIES – Native American groups will be studied. Projects are due on Dec. 1.

· Students may continue to bring in canned goods for the food drive.
· Just as a reminder, family members are invited to the Christmas Play on Dec. 15 at 1:00.
· Students may still need some type of costume, Christmas shirt, or prop. Please check with your child.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 16-20

RELIGION – We will have a Unit Test this week. Students will need to study the vocabulary words in the unit. The Unit Review on p. 135-138 is also a great review. Students will begin this review in class on Wed. It should be completed at home on Wed. evening. The test is on Friday.

READING – This week we’ll read The Gardener. We’ll work on cause/effect. The students should study vocabulary for this story. The selection test is on Friday.

ENGLISH – Action/Linking Verbs will be introduced. We will also work on Thanksgiving poetry and writing.

SPELLING – The new words are: night, picture, being, study, and second. We will work on adding s, es, and ies, and on contractions. Homework is due on Thursday.

MATH – We will study units of weight, temperature, and problem solving using working backwards.

SCIENCE – We’ll begin our study of water and its importance. We will also study salt and fresh water and estuaries. Students will have homework about water usage given on Tuesday. It is due on Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES – We will study communities and how they change and grow. Students have a Native American Poster Project due on Dec. 1. · Students need to work on memorizing their part for the Christmas program. Most of the parts are very small and should not take long to learn.
· We can use some help with props and costumes. Many students will need just a Christmas shirt and/or hat if possible. Be sure to check with your child.

NEWSLETTER – NOV. 9-13

RELIGION – We will begin to study the Trinity.
READING – This week we’ll read William’s House. We will work on drawing conclusions and characters. Students should study vocabulary from this story. The Selection Test is on Friday.
ENGLISH – We will finish our personal narratives and work on singular and plural possessive nouns.
SPELLING - The new words are: mother, light, country, father, and let. We will work on compounds and the digraphs sh, th, ph, ch, and tch. Homework is due on Thursday.
MATH - We will work on standard linear measurement, liquid measurement and units of weight. Students may need some review of converting measurements to a larger or smaller unit.
SCIENCE – Chapter Test is on Friday. We’ll begin the Chapter Review pgs. C82-83 on Tuesday. This is due by Thursday.
SOCIAL STUDIES – We’ll study Veterans’ Day. A Native American Poster Project will be assigned and sent home this week.

· Veterans’ Day Celebration is Tuesday at 1:35. All veterans are welcome. If you have any service men or women in your family be sure to send in his/her name, rank, and branch of military.

Students are working on the Veterans' Day Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 11. We are also preparing for the Science Test on Friday.


They certainly showed team spirit on at the Pep Rally.

Crusader Classic Pep Rally

The third graders attended their first Pep Rally. Teams were introduced and the newly formed cheerleading squad even made an appearance. Good Luck to all teams and especially the third graders.

School News

The students did a great job with the continents and oceans. They really enjoyed making the balloon globes. We are now studying about city government and the history of Yuma, Arizona. Our Unit 1 Test is Sept. 18.


In Science, we are continuing to study rocks and minerals. We will have a test on Chapter C1 on Sept 17. Our field trip is Oct. 28. Thanks for the parent response. We should have enough drivers, but everyone is welcome.


This week we are starting on our service project. The third graders will be making cards for the senior members of St. Barbara Parish. Hopefully we will mail these cards soon.

The first two weeks of third grade have gone well. Students are learning about the 3 types of rocks, the continents, and oceans and many other subjects.

Our first field trip is scheduled for Oct. 28. We will visit California Woods for the Land Across Time Program. Hopefully we will have good weather, but rain or shine we will go!

St. Henry Third Grade News

WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE! It's going to be a great school year. I am Mrs. Franks and I will be your child's teacher. This is my 23rd year at St. Henry. I've also spent some time in grades 4, 6, and 7. I am looking forward to working with your child.
